Stumbled across this restaurant by chance after visiting Alnwick Castle and Gardens and very gald we did. The staff were helpful and friendly. The decor was modern, arty and very tasteful, pity we couldn't buy some of the pictures!
The selection of vegetarian food available was much more varied and imaginative than in a lot of other restaurants. The beetroot and goats cheese tart was possibly the best thing I have ever tasted. The red pepper and feta cheese risotto was lovely too. The restaurant isn't just for vegetarians however. My husband's only complaint was that his homemade burger was too large to fit in his mouth and he had to use his knife and fork. If that's all we can complain about, it tells you what a great restaurant this is.
We hadn't booked, and were lucky to get a table in the evening, as sevaral who came after us had to wait - some even outside at the cafe tables. The food was good, and plentiful (what I thought was the next table's main was in fact the starter!). Atmosphere and decor was good, and I would go again - with a booking! Recommended
My wife and I took a week long holiday from the Thames Valley home to stay one night in Harrogate [The Old Swan - Agatha Christie!] and move on to a cottage 2 miles otside Alnwick. First night there, we discovered the small town centre of Alnwick and eventually chose the Art House, tucked away down a small side passage. If it was not for the pavement boards, we may have missed it.
What a treat. Small, cosy and personal certainly. They were just about booked up [it was a Saturday evening] but they found a table for two.
A glass of house red and a pint of a local bottled ale saw us browsing the excellent and very varied menu. We selected loaded potato skins and mushrooms stuffed with Brie and walnuts. Mains were Chicken with a sweet chili noodle in a Thai style and a salmon Risotto.
All I can say is that the food was absolutely wonderful and far exceeded our expectations. Indeed, over the course of our week in Northumberland, we never had a bad or even a slightly disappointing meal. However, the Art House was top of the table for us and we decided to try and go back on our last night. Again we were able to get a table and the meal was as good as the first.
Highly recommended. The young owners showed us polite courtesy, an interest in where were from and what we had been doing.
If in Alnwick - try the Art House. We will when we next go back.
